Packing, Packing and More Packing

I have had plenty of experience in packing up and moving. My husband and I have moved 13 times in our 34 years of marriage. This move (number 14, by the way) is different in many ways. The obvious difference is that it is all the way to the other side of the world. For some reason we have made this far more complicated. We have several different piles that have developed.

Pile number one is everything that we would like to ship over to Hong Kong. It was in the middle of our living room so we could keep track of everything.

Pile number two is all that we want to store. Actually this pile is mostly packed, itemized, and numbered boxes that routinely move over to our climate-controlled storage unit. It contains my grandma’s crystal, family heirlooms, artwork, and important items that we do not want to get rid of but cannot take with us.

Piles number three, four, and five consist of piles that each of my daughters have to go through to take what they want. Then the pile shifts to what we are saving for a family who is moving back from China. After this family goes through that pile all will go to a local charity where they resell items to support a variety of school and church ministries. I do not have the patience to have a garage sale (or yard sale or tag sale or any other sale).

We almost always have about 5 or 6 boxes that are almost full but not quite. And now we also have the piles of semi-packed luggage that we will take with us. It is hard to remember where something might be at this point. And I have lost a couple of things already; or are these things in the shipment that is on its way to Hong Kong already?

Last week the movers/packers came to our home to pack up the pile in the middle of our living room. They were quick and efficient. We hope that the books, clothes, and other items make it to Hong Kong by the end of August or September some time. Meanwhile, I go looking for a specific washcloth and cannot find it. It gets very confusing. Oh,well. It is only stuff.  IMG_4119

My confirmation verse is Matthew 6:33 – “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” I actually like all of chapter 6.  These words of God have served me well since my confirmation years ago reminding me to seek God first! All those other things mean very little in the long run. There is still a little part of me that hopes that when I get to heaven I will have the house with the dishwasher.  IMG_4124
